Director of Music for Traditional Worship
First United Methodist Church in Missouri City, TX seeks a part-time (20 hours per week) director of music for its weekly traditional worship services. The ideal candidate is experienced, energetic, and passionate about what creative traditional worship can be, while displaying a servant’s heart. Our desire is to model for the modern church what a well-rounded, robust music program can be, both to its congregation and the surrounding community.
Weekly responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
• Overseeing music budget, music staff, and all aspects of traditional worship music organization.
o Music staff currently includes two organists/accompanists and a part-time handbell director.
o Music staff can be expanded to include four paid section leaders.
o Using Planning Center Online as the primary management tool for the Music Ministry to manage both events and people.
• Cultivating and regularly using small groups and soloists, both instrumental and vocal, for worship.
o Hire incidental instrumentalists as needed.
• Conducting and rehearsing adult choir.
o Planning in advance, selecting music, being timely and consistent.
o Cultivating community and relationships, with an ability to identify, recruit, equip and motivate musicians.
o Stretching volunteer abilities through a variety of styles and genres.
o Coordinating possible tours, retreats, etc.
• Actively curating traditional worship music both for Sunday worship and special seasons.
o Confidently leading various aspects of a worship service.
o Knowing and using varied music and worship styles.
o Coordinating musical selections with appropriate worship themes and scriptures.
o Committing to the ongoing vision and strategy of FUMCMC.
o Striving for excellence in all aspects of music and worship.
o Appreciating old and new liturgies, hymns, and the like.
• Other responsibilities:
o Weekly staff meetings
o Seasonal long-range planning
o Continuing education (TMEA, TCDA/ACDA, Texas Conference Choir Clinic and/or
o Pastoral care as needed for staff and volunteers relating to the Music Ministry of FUMC MC.
The successful candidate will report directly to, and collaborate with, the Director of Worship Ministries, as well as clergy, other program staff, volunteers, and church leadership. The position hours are varied and will require weekday, evenings, and weekend work. The ideal candidate will be proficient at the keyboard and in voice development, have an advanced music degree or five years’ experience leading traditional music services, and a heart for traditional worship in the 21st century. Salary is commensurate with experience. The position is currently part-time, with the possibility of full-time given dynamic leadership and growth.
