Monday Musical Moment: Burna Boy!

Justin Langham   -
Happy Monday!
This time of year is always interesting, or at least it has been since I moved to Houston in 2013. May is the time when school and many other aspects of my life begin, slowly but surely, begin to wrap up and time begins to open up for other activities, like sleep and recovery for starters! For those of you whose lives are in any way tied to the school year, you can very much relate to this feeling.
However, this year is very different in one big way. I am not only wrapping up the school year of teaching and private lessons, but more importantly, I am wrapping up my doctoral program and will be graduating this coming Friday May 13th! It’s a surreal feeling to say the least and hard to believe at times, but after all the struggles the last two years have brought, from escaping Europe during a pandemic and fracturing half of my face, I am looking forward to taking a huge sigh of relief once I am officially “hooded” as a doctor of musical arts.
Over the past year or so, I’ve listened to a lot of music by a Nigerian musician named Burna Boy, who has become world-renown extremely quickly. I think that one reason he has achieved such wide fame in a short period of time is that his music has 1) a genuine happiness to it and 2) a great groove that makes you feel good. My good friends and family, even some here at the church, have heard me talk about Burna Boy’s music several times, but I can’t recommend his music highly enough if you want to relax and smile. His is music that puts me in a more chill, relaxed, and overall a more carefree mood.
As my doctorate comes to a close there are lots of emotions that all come in waves, but I think once it’s all said and done, I’ll take some time to relax and listen to some Burna Boy! Here is one of my favorites, “Wonderful.” You may not understand all the words, but it will put a smile on your face!

Have a great week!
