On each Tuesday during Lent, we will offer a Lenten study on the Beatitudes: Blessed Are You. Many of us love the Beatitudes but we fail to take them seriously as ethical guidelines. Many of us see them as spiritual promises and not operating principles. When we do take them as ethical guidelines, we often turn them into idealistic and unattainable ones. On Tuesday nights during Lent, we are going to re-acquaint and re-discover the Beatitudes for ourselves.
In an article called Cold Turkey, Kurt Vonnegut, the famous satirical American author, wrote: “For some reason, the most vocal Christians among us never mention the beatitudes. But – often with tears in their eyes – they demand that the Ten Commandments be posted in public buildings. And of course, that’s Moses, not Jesus. I haven’t heard one of them demand that the Sermon on the Mount, the Beatitudes, be posted anywhere.”
Well, it is time for us to take up Vonnegut’s challenge and post the Beatitudes everywhere by making them part of our lives.
